Things to Know About PVC Eco-Friendly Yoga Mats

PVC is a type of plastic commonly used in yoga and exercise mats. You will find them not only in cheap yoga mats, but also in better mats to keep your eyes open!

New non-yoga fragrance:

Open the new plastic yoga mat and you will smell it. It comes from chemicals that are released as respiratory gas. It is a greenhouse gas and can harm the environment, but it also strengthens your home (or studio) and contributes to indoor air pollution.

VOC, one of the chemicals in yoga mats, is associated with headaches, liver, kidney and nervous system damage, irritation and allergies.

Yoga mats are harmful to you and the environment.

PVC contains many chemicals, and phthalates are the most controversial. They are potential endocrine disruptors, meaning they can interfere with hormones. They are associated with a variety of reproductive problems in both men and women, from ovarian damage to an increased risk of miscarriage and gestational diabetes. Endocrine disruptors, infertility, and heart disease are also associated with endocrine disruptors. The National Cancer Institute warns against exposure to PVC due to the high risk of many cancers.

PVC is also harmful to the environment due to its disposal method. This has been the center of debate for decades and is becoming more common. Many companies (such as Apple) have banned PVC, and many others are reducing their use due to consumer pressure, so choose a yoga mat other than PVC!

Are PER Yoga Mats or TPE Yoga Mats Environmentally Friendly and Safe?

Easy answer: No. They are often advertised as the worst yoga mat option. Yoga mats are safer and more environmentally friendly than PVC because they do not contain phthalates. We don’t know much about them, so don’t go into the claims of non-toxic yoga mats.

Plastic poses a health and environmental risk at all stages of its life cycle. Plastics can contain chemicals in the body, and even yoga mats (another common endocrine disruptor) that do not contain phthalates or BPA have been found to have adverse health effects.

It gets hot, but it’s especially problematic for people who like hot yoga.

My Rating of Plastic Yoga Mats:

If harming safety and the environment is not enough, as a yoga teachers, we recommend plastic mats for a variety of reasons.

They are very slippery: plastic mats have no grip and are dangerous. Of course, if you sweat with a falling dog and try to balance it, you are more likely to get injured.

They are very difficult to clean: they often collect the smell of sweat, especially if you fold them immediately after practicing hot yoga.

In yoga classes, we spend a lot of time in contact with the mat. The mat touches the skin and breathes, and in Vinyasa’s class it is usually difficult to look at the mat. A good yoga mat will help you practice safely!
